Davies Turner takes on more apprentices

Leading UK independent freight forwarder and logistics operator Davies Turner & Co Ltd has recruited a record 13 graduate and A-Level apprentices this year – the company’s sixth annual intake since it started its national apprenticeship and trainee programme in 2010.

In line with the successful approach taken for the first five groups, the new intake will all be recruited on the basis of two-year contracts.

They will have the opportunity to be trained in all Davies Turner’s different departments, before agreeing with their managers and mentors which department or section best suits both the Company and the Trainee in the longer term.

They will be based at the main hubs and branches throughout the UK, and will undertake an 18 month long apprenticeship, followed by a BIFA-accredited in-house multimodal course.

Altogether the nationwide programme lasts two years, and participants spend time in all surface freight and logistics divisions as well as getting an overview of central admin, IT systems sales and the accounts departments, plus Davies Turner Air Cargo which has also taken on trainees of its own.

Group Chairman Philip Stephenson explained further: “As ever, the quality and commitment of the youngsters is impressive. So is their keenness and willingness to learn about the industry. I am sure they will enjoy their time learning these valuable skills and will be enabled to play an important role in the company going forward.”

He adds: “Being part of a wide ranging multimodal freight and logistics company, the Davies Turner apprenticeship provides a comprehensive grounding in key aspects of forwarding and international trade. I hope that we will be setting a few more people off on a long and rewarding career in our industry.”

As before, Davies Turner has targeted ‘A’- level school leavers and graduates. Practical considerations and Davies Turner’s previous experience suggest that Year 13 school leavers and higher education recruits tend to profit most from their time with the company.

Mr Stephenson says: "Many of our previous trainees have already moved into responsible roles in the company and are a credit both to themselves and the quality of our apprenticeship programme. We place equal emphasis on training our existing staff and look on all this as a vital investment for the future.”
